The just-passed Fourth of July holiday has long been known as a time loaded with family, fun and fireworks. Chances are, it was also a dangerous time for teen boys—particularly for those who drink. A study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicates underage males visit the emergency room twice as frequently during the Fourth of July holiday weekend as they do on a normal summer weekend. Most of these boys owed their hospital visits to alcohol poisoning, drunk driving accidents or fighting. “This is a high-risk period for them,” says Dr. Pete Delaney, director of the Center for Behavioral Statistics for the organization.
