Colleges like to be known for their academics, professors, football teams…any number of things, really. Most, however, would rather not be connected to porn. So it makes sense—albeit somewhat ironic—that colleges and universities are scrambling to buy domain names ending with the newly branded “.xxx” tag. Schools are trying to prevent pornographers from using the names to market their unsavory product. The University of Kansas, for instance, snapped up names such as “www.KUgirls.xxx,” “www.KUnurses.xxx” and others that it has no intention of ever, ever using—nearly 3,000 worth of domain names in all. “Down the road, there’s no way we can predict what some unscrupulous entrepreneur might come up with,” says Paul Vander, trademark licensing director for KU.
