More children than ever are living with at least one grandparent, according to a census report. In fact, figures culled from 2009 data report that around 7.8 million kids under age 18 live with a grandparent, way up from the 4.7 million who did so in 1991. The increase in grandparents and grandchildren living together doesn’t necessarily mean grandparents are becoming the kids’ primary caregivers, though. About three-fourths of kids who live with a grandparent or two also live in a household with at least one parent, too. “There’s absolutely no question it’s been on the rise because of the recession,” says Gary Drevitch, editor-in-chief of Grandparents.com. “What’s been interesting is that in the past, you imagine grandparents moving in with their adult children and grandchildren because they could no longer maintain their own home. The trend during the recession has been multigenerational households created because adult children have moved in with the grandparents. It’s adult children struggling in the economy.” (USA Today)
