Three high schoolers from Newtown, Conn., have been arrested in a sexting scandal with a new wrinkle: Not only were they distributing sexually explicit pictures of classmates, but selling them—allegedly for $10 to $20. The three were arrested on child pornography charges, as well as “promoting a minor in an obscene performance.”
While this case was unusual in some respects, sexting hardly is unusual. According to a 2008 study by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, more than a fifth of teen girls and 18 percent of teen boys have sent or posted erotic images of themselves. Many experts believe that figure is higher now, given that applications such as Snapchat and Kik did not exist back then. (Connecticut Post)
