The Internet is shaping and molding today’s youth into who and what they are. Says who? Well, says today’s youth. According to a survey commissioned by The Atlantic and The Aspen Institute, 59 percent of Americans ages 18 to 29 say social networks and the Internet in general are having a “great deal” or “fair amount” of influence on who and what they are. In contrast, less than two-fifths of elderly Americans—those ages 65 and up—would say the same thing. Youth tend to trust the Internet and online corporations more than their elders, as well. More than half of them believe information they give to entities such as Facebook and Twitter will stay private, and a full 40 percent say they don’t mind companies tracking what they do online.
