A 14-year-old boy, at least partly inspired by a controversial Foster the People song, was arrested after allegedly posting threats against his old middle school. The song, “Pumped Up Kicks” gives voice to a disturbed teen planning a Columbine-style shooting: “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks/you better run, better run, outrun my gun,” the song’s chorus begins. The boy, in the comments section for the “Pumped Up Kicks” video on YouTube, wrote, “this song makes me think of doing this to people at school,” and talks about conducting a “killing spree” the following day unless someone calls police. Helpfully, the boy included his home address. “He gave out a specific place and time for when it would happen,” said Sergeant Jessie Spurgin, a sheriff’s spokesman for Maricopa County, Arizona. “That made it a little more credible in our eyes.” When law enforcement arrived at the boy’s home, they found a sawed-off shotgun.
