Many people get much of their news from Facebook these days, which is great when the news is true. Unfortunately, much of the news making the rounds on the popular social network are hoaxes. Now, Facebook is taking steps to cull hoax news stories from its network.
Facebook won’t do any fact-checking itself: Instead, it will rely on users to call out a story as fake. Once a given story has been called out as a hoax, Facebook will decrease its visibility on users’ walls, and should someone try to post the outed story, Facebook will notify the would-be poster the story likely is fabricated.
Satirical news stories from sites such as The Onion will not be impacted: There’s a difference, Facebook says, between hoax news stories and satire. (National Public Radio)
