Facebook announced Oct. 4, 2012, that it has more than 1 billion users around the globe—about 40 percent of the world’s 2.5 billion Internet users. “Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life,” Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement to users. About four-fifths of those billion people live outside the United States and Canada; and despite rumors that many youth are leaving the social networking site, the average user increasingly is younger: The median age is 22, compared with 26 in 2008. Those billion users are responsible for posting 219 billion pictures and a whopping 1.13 trillion “likes.” (USA Today)
