With hundreds of millions of users logged into Facebook at any given time, there’s no question that Mark Zuckerberg’s brainchild is the most popular social networking site around. It’s become so ubiquitous that some people believe everyone has one, and if you don’t…well, be prepared for some to wonder if you’ve got something to hide. “Anecdotally, I’ve heard job seekers and employers wonder aloud about what it means if a job candidate doesn’t have a Facebook account,” writes Kashmir Hill of Forbes. “Does it mean they deactivated it because it was full of red flags? Are they hiding something?” The lack of a Facebook account has, again anecdotally, interfered with the dating lives of some folks. Obviously, the logic is flawed. There are lots of good reasons people never join Facebook; and as we’ve reported, many former Facebook users are dropping their accounts. Still, that hasn’t altered the perception. “My own boyfriend isn’t on Facebook, and I don’t hold it against him (too much),” continues Hill. “It does seem that increasingly, it’s expected that everyone is on Facebook in some capacity and that a negative assumption is starting to arise about those who reject the Big Blue Giant’s siren call.” (Forbes)
