It stands to reason that overweight kids eat more than their more svelte peers. Why? According to German researchers, it could be because their tastebuds are less sensitive. For the study, researchers selected nearly 200 children ages 6 to 18, half of whom were of normal weight and half of whom were obese, then measured their taste sensitivities using a barrage of taste strips. They found that kids who weighed about what they should had an average taste detection score of 14, while overweight peers scored 12.6. Researchers believe fat kids may need to eat more to achieve the same level of taste satisfaction from eating, but they also admit obesity actually may do something to deaden tastebuds. (Time)
