Project X, a movie about a party that gets outrageously out of hand, apparently has inspired a handful of copycats—with unfortunate results. A man in Houston was killed during a massive party, allegedly inspired by the movie. The victim, an unidentified male between the ages of 17 and 19, was shot several times and died at a nearby hospital. The party allegedly attracted between 500 and 1,000 high school and college-age revelers, and many say Project X was the impetus for the party and the reason so many attended. It neither was the first such party in the Houston area to use the film as a source of inspiration, nor in other parts of the country. An unoccupied home in Miramar, Fla., recently was vandalized before a planned party, and Project X had been spray painted along some of the walls. “[The damaged house] looks like the movie scene,” said Eric Nathanson, a real estate broker in the area. Police uncovered plans for the party before it began and turned away as many as 2,000 disappointed revelers. The house still suffered an estimated $20,000 worth of damage.
