Teens looking for jobs this summer could be in for a long, frustrating search. Teen unemployment hit 24 percent this spring, and many employers are looking to fill their seasonal slots early. In fact, some already have wrapped up their hiring. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Ind., hired 2,100 workers for this summer in February and March. Now they’re simply training them. “I’ve been at Holiday World Theme Park for 18 years and have never seen our HR department fill all of our seasonal needs so easily,” said Paula Werne, the park’s spokesperson. “Sadly, it’s because of the economy.” More specifically, it’s because there are so many adults out of work, and they’re taking jobs that ordinarily would fall to teens. Retirees are looking to make an extra buck, too, by taking part-time jobs. While more than 1 million jobs have been created by the food industry in the past decade, the number of 16- to 19-year-olds filling those jobs has fallen by 250,000. (MSNBC)
