Conventional wisdom tells us that girls tend to be better at writing, while boys excel at math and science. Google’s first science fair tells us something completely different. Girls swept to victory in each of the fair’s three age categories, which featured more than 10,000 would-be scientists from around the glob competing. Lauren Hodge won the 13- to14-year-old age group by studying “the effect of different marinades on the level of potentially harmful carcinogens in grilled chicken.” Naomi Shah found that “making changes to indoor environments that improve indoor air quality can reduce people’s reliance on asthma medications” to win the 15- to16-year-old class. Shree Bose “discovered a way to improve ovarian cancer treatment for patients when they have built up a resistance to certain chemotherapy drugs” to take the 17- to 18-year-old group and first place overall. Bose earned a $50,000 scholarship, while Shah and Hodge each took home $25,000 scholarships. (Time)
