As it turns out, you can lose calories while watching television. The catch: You have to watch horror films. Researchers from the University of Westminster sat a handful of subjects down in front of a variety of horror films and monitored their caloric usage. The subjects always burned more than 100 calories per flick, but the results were dependent on the movie. Watching The Shining used a whopping 184 calories—the highest in the study—while Jaws ate up 161 calories. More modern fright films, such as Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project, only burned 111 and 105 calories, respectively. Surprised? The researchers say it’s just a matter of science. “Each of the 10 films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies,” says Dr. Richard Mackenzie, a specialist in cell metabolism. “As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline. It is this release of fast-acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories.” (London Telegraph)
