New Hampshire is considering legislation to keep youth under the age of 18 from visiting indoor tanning centers—looking to join a dozen other states that have closed tanning booths to teens.
It’s no secret that tanning is pretty unhealthy, having been linked to skin cancer, premature aging of the skin and other ills. However, none of that has been enough to keep youth from tanning booths. A study from (appropriately enough) the University of South Florida found that repeatedly warning folks of the risks of tanning wasn’t enough to keep youth, especially young women, away. Many girls feel that deep tans make them more beautiful and confident. Another study from Australia found that adolescent females with low self-confidence were more likely to use tanning beds.
“I don’t think anybody should be tanning,” 19-year-old McKenzie Thorpe told the Concord Monitor. “I still tan.” (Slate)
