After years of declines, drug and alcohol use among teens is creeping back up, according to a new poll by The Partnership at Drugfree.org. Ecstasy has seen the greatest rate of increase among high schoolers—up 67 percent between 2008 and 2010. Still, overall usage of ecstasy is comparatively rare among high school youth—particularly when you compare it to marijuana, another drug rising in popularity. Nearly one-third of high schoolers reported using the drug in 2010—up from 22 percent who used two years before—but no drug has been normalized as much as alcohol. Nearly 62 percent of teens say they consumed their first alcoholic drink by age 15, and a quarter said they drank their first bit of booze when they were 12 or younger. Forty-five percent of high schoolers say they don’t think it’s particularly risky to drink heavily every day, and 73 percent say they have friends who drink weekly. (The Partnership at Drugfree.org)
