Wheaton College, a prominent Christian school near Chicago, suspended Associate Professor Larycia Hawkins after she suggested that Muslims and Christians worship the same God.
Hawkins, who teaches political science at the college, had been wearing an Islamic headscarf called a hijab to show solidarity with Muslims this month. In a statement on Facebook, she wrote in part: “I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book…as Pope Francis [said] last week, we worship the same God.”
Many initial reports suggested that Hawkins was suspended for wearing the hijab, but according to a statement from Wheaton, that’s not true. It was her assertion that Christians and Muslims worship the same God that brought the suspension.
“The freedom to wear a head scarf as a gesture of care and compassion for individuals in Muslim or other religious communities that may face discrimination or persecution is afforded to Dr. Hawkins as a faculty member of Wheaton College,” the statement said. “Yet her recently expressed views, including that Muslims and Christians worship the same God, appear to be in conflict with the College’s Statement of Faith.” (The Atlantic)
