Chase Culpepper, a 17-year-old transgender student, is getting an apology from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles—the upshot of an incident last year when a DMV employee told her that she needed to look male for her driver’s license photo.
Culpepper, who was 16 at the time, filed a lawsuit against the state, and in a settlement with Culpepper and her family, the DMV has agreed to change its photo policy and institute training on how employees should treat people who identify as transgender.
“I am thrilled with the outcome of my lawsuit,” Culpepper said afterward. “My clothing and makeup reflect who I am. From day one, all I wanted was to get a driver’s license that looks like me. Now I will be able to do that.” (ABC News)
