Where do kids under the age of 13 hang out these days? Facebook, of course. More than 7.5 million American children congregate on the popular social networking site, according to Consumer Reports‘ annual “State of the Net” survey—even though they’re not really supposed to be there. Facebook requires its users be at least 13 to participate, but that doesn’t stop legions of pre-teens from logging on. Consumer Reports found that 5 million U.S. kids ages 10 and under have their very own Facebook profiles—and those numbers could be low. The magazine, after all, polled parents of these social networking kids. There are probably a few out there who have children on Facebook and don’t know it. Consumer Reports noted these underage kids weren’t typically supervised by parents—a problem, in the magazine’s estimation, as it opens them up to “malware or serious threats such as predators and bullies.” (Time)
