Teens always have spent lots of time with friends, but these days those friendships often are created and lived largely online.
According to the Pew Research Center, 57 percent of teens ages 13 to 17 have met a new friend online, often through social media or online gaming. Nearly three in 10 teens say they’ve met five new friends online. Rarely do those Internet-based friendships translate into real-world interactions. Just one-fifth of these teens have ever met their online friends in person.
When it comes to existing friends, more than half of teens—about 55 percent—text their friends every day. Only 25 percent actually see their friends in person on a daily basis. (Pew Research Center)
