Six video games make up the inaugural class of the World Video Game Hall of Fame, located in the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York. The inductees were “Pong” (1972), “Pac-Man” (1980), “Tetris” (1984), “Super Mario Bros.” (1985), “Doom” (1993) and “World of Warcraft” (2004).
Each inductee made an indelible impact on the video game industry in one way or another, and “Doom” was selected in part because of its notoriety. It was, according to the Associated Press, “one of the early games cited in the debate that continues today [about] whether violent games inspire real-life aggression.” (Wired)
