First they beat us at Chess. Then “Jeopardy.” Now, technological gizmos are encroaching on another game in which humans always have held the upper hand: Rock-Paper-Scissors. Technologists at the University of Tokyo have invented a robot hand that, according to its designers, wins rock-paper-scissors contests against their humanoid every single time. Its secret? Greater processing power. The robot can see what you’re about to do at the rate of 1,000 frames a second, while we only have the capacity to see stuff at a 30-frame-per-second rate. Add to that the fact the robot arm can move 33 times faster than we can, and you’ve got an unbeatable foe. Unless, of course, you change the game without telling the hand to rock-paper-scissors-baseball bat. (ABC News)
