McDonald’s, the ubiquitous fast-food franchise, long been the bane of nutrition advocates, says it’s revamping its Happy Meals to include apple slices, a smaller serving of fries and a carton of milk—either fat-free chocolate or 1 percent white milk. Customers can forgo fries altogether if they want to get more apple slices. “McDonald’s always will try to do the right thing, and we know we can help make a difference in our communities,” said Jan Fields, president of McDonald’s USA. “The commitments we’re announcing today will guide the future evolution of our menu and marketing.” The new meals will be available this September.
