“Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much” (Luke 16:10).
Years ago an elderly couple was looking for a room in a small Philadelphia hotel during the height of convention season. When they discovered there were no rooms, a kindly young man at the front desk offered his own room to the couple. This small act of kindness later was rewarded when, two years later, the young man received a mysterious ticket to New York and there was offered the management position of the prestigious Waldorf-Astoria Hotel by the elderly gentleman, Mr. Astor. The young clerk? His name was George Boldt.
As Jesus taught, there is no such thing as a small matter. How we treat others day-to-day, how we work, how we pray, how we strive for kingdom…these seemingly small affairs often can lead to much larger responsibilities. Being faithful over the small things signifies we would be faithful over the large responsibilities.
Youth leaders would do well to remind themselves faithfulness over small matters leads to the opportunity to be faithfulness over large matters. Even if one is working with a small group of teens, great work can occur from a place of faithfulness and attention.
What we do for others—and how well we do it—brings the kingdom of God near, especially in youth ministry!
