“He withdrew apart from the crowds…” (Matt. 14:13).

Now that most states have implemented educational reform and longer school years, the summer break has been reduced to a blur. Year-round school now tugs at the front and back ends of a very pinched schedule, and youth ministries feel the crunch, as well. As one class of teenagers is moving on, a new crop is taking shape.

Because of the new school daze, youth leaders would do well to follow the example of Jesus and withdraw from ministry for a short season to recharge, refresh and refocus. If Jesus needed rest, so do we. If the crowds wore Jesus to a frazzle, we can expect the same.

A recent story on NBC revealed that many Americans now work longer hours than ever—and some businesses mandate their employees take a break. With our constant ability to connect via computer and smartphone to all things work-related, being on can become an obsession, maybe a death wish.

Yet we cannot forget God has built Sabbath into creation itself. Every living thing has its season of rest and renewal—times of fallow and times of new growth. Ask yourself: What do I need to stop doing so I can prepare myself for the demands of ministry in the near future? What rest will I build into my schedule so I can stay strong and vibrant in the work God has given me to do?
