“Better a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king” (Ecc. 4:13, NIV).
The Book of Ecclesiastes often has been described as the most honest book in the Bible…a treatise that does not hide from the difficult questions concerning life’s meaning and our many unanswered questions about life. The book also contains some wonderful wisdom for teenagers and for those who lead youth groups.
Through the years, I have encountered the truth of this wise saying, as I have known many spiritually and intellectually deep teenagers. Many in the church are apt to say, “Youth are the church of tomorrow,” but teenagers are the church now!
Teenagers have much wisdom and insight to offer to God’s people every day. In our congregation, teenagers are in charge (some are on payroll) of the visual and audio technology worship team. Teens also help with our website, help to guide our discussion about future vision and goals, and serve on our building team to help design new spaces. Likewise, many teenagers are adept at writing, the arts and music.
As you consider the talented and spiritually gifted teenagers in your care, consider where they may best be used for the kingdom of God. Where might they serve? Where might they be of great help to the congregation?
Your work with the teenagers is some of the most important work of all. You are not just identifying leaders of the future church, but are raising those leaders now. It’s an awesome responsibility, but the church is in your hands.
